Get acquainted with Heart to Heart, an Orlando charity (501c3) and a partner of Winter Park Events’ annual Chowder Festival.
On any given night in January 2015, there were more than 560,000 American people that could be considered homeless – sleeping on the streets, in their cars or in an emergency shelter (National Alliance to End Homelessness, 2016). This does not include those people fortunate enough to double up with friends or relatives during their time of transition, but lack a permanent home of their own.
It’s a frightening idea, right? For many of us, our homes are the kind of thing we take for granted. Although you can’t drive very far in Central Florida without encountering the homeless – it’s not uncommon to think that something like that won’t happen to us. The fact is, more than 60 percent of Americans have no emergency savings and are a mere paycheck away from homelessness themselves (MarketWatch.com, 2016) – meaning this is more of a reality for many of us than we could have possibly imagined.
That’s where Heart to Heart Central Florida, an Orlando charity, comes in. Winter Park Events is proud to benefit Heart to Heart: A Community Care Home, a non-profit organization serving Central Florida’s homeless population since 1992, at our 2016 Chowder Festival event on January 28. Their mission is to “[create] a pathway of self-sufficiency for homeless women with children by providing housing, social services, education and job training” for the 1,600+ members of the homeless community in Central Florida.
Winter Park Events’ 2016 Chowder Festival is about more than finding new restaurants, or trying new chowders (although that is a huge plus!) It’s also about community. You can interact with members of your own community and have an opportunity to support the most-worthy cause of all – providing love and support to the people who need it most, right here in your local community.
Stay tuned as we highlight a few of the critical services that Heart to Heart: A Community Care Home provides to the homeless in Central Florida, and “meet” a few of the people who are hard at work for Heart to Heart day in and day out. Check out ways you can get involved, and some of the many ways this Orlando nonprofit puts your donations to work.
In the meantime, check them out on their website.
